Presidio, San Francisco, California Situated in the lush, tranquil resort-like surroundings of the historic Presidio,Sens spa is a 13,000 square foot personal paradise. A mini- vacation - whether for an hour or a day." This is what it says on their website. With a grandfather who was the commanding officer of the Presidio for short period of time I find it hard to refer to the presidio as resort like. In any event this spa is as good as it gets. 415-441-1777 National Presidio, SF, California, www.senspa.com Berkeley, California Nestled in the beautiful hills facing one of the world’s great travel destinations, the Claremont Resort & Spa opened in 1915 and gained a reputation as a retreat for wealthy San Franciscans to escage the fog on “the sunny side of the Bay.” Majestically resting on 22 acres of beautifully landscaped gardens, its panoramic views of the Bay and city skyline are unequalled. San Francisco Zen Center was established in 1962 by Shunryu Suzuki Roshi (1904-1971) and his American students. Suzuki Roshi is known to countless readers as the author of the modern spiritual classic, Zen Mind, Beginner's Mind. The purpose of San Francisco Zen Center is to make accessible and embody the wisdom and compassion of the Buddha as expressed in the Soto Zen tradition established by Dogen Zenji in 13th-century Japan and conveyed to us by Suzuki Roshi and other Buddhist teachers. Our practice flows from the insight that all beings are Buddha, and that sitting in meditation is itself the realization of Buddha nature, or enlightenment. Today, San Francisco Zen Center is one of the largest Buddhist sanghas outside Asia. It has three practice places: City Center in the vibrant heart of San Francisco; Green Gulch Farm, whose organic fields meet the ocean in Marin County; and Tassajara Zen Mountain Center -- the first Zen training monastery in the West -- in the Ventana Wilderness inland from Big Sur. These three complementary practice centers offer daily meditation, regular monastic retreats and practice periods, classes, lectures, and workshops. Zen Center is a practice place for a diverse population of students, visitors, lay people, priests, and monks guided by teachers who follow in Suzuki Roshi's style of warm hand and heart to warm hand and heart. All are welcome. Zen Center programs also reach out to the community, helping prisoners, the homeless, and those in recovery; protecting the environment; and working for peace. See our outreach program for details. Suzuki Roshi's disciples and students of his disciples now lead dharma groups around the country. Founded in England in 1968 by Urgyen Sangharakshita, FWBO draws inspiration from the whole of the Buddhist tradition and is based in central teachings that are common to all the main schools. At the heart of the FWBO is the Western Buddhist Order, made up of men and women from diverse backgrounds who have dedicated their lives to the practice of Buddhism. We are located in San Francisco's Mission district, and provide a comprehensive program of Buddhist meditation classes and courses, Buddhism courses, writing and performance events, yoga classes, residential weekend and week-long retreats, nonresidential day retreats, and more! For more information, see our calendar. Our community is dedicated to supporting the development of spiritual friendship among those who wish to experience the benefits of Buddhist practice and believe that it can make a constructive contribution to the modern world. Green Gulch Farm Zen Center, also known as Green Dragon Temple (Soryu-ji), is a Buddhist practice center in the Japanese Soto Zen tradition offering training in Zen meditation and ordinary work. It is one of three centers that make up San Francisco Zen Center, which was founded by Shunryu Suzuki-roshi. Our effort at Green Gulch is to awaken in ourselves and the many people who come here the bodhisattva spirit, the spirit of kindness and realistic helpfulness. This is how we offer our understanding of Buddha's Way. Green Gulch Farm is located in Marin County, just north of San Francisco, in a valley that opens out onto the Pacific Ocean. In addition to the temple program of zen and study, it includes an organic farm and garden, as well as a guest house and conference center.
