CHINA GIRL Twisted was probably the most recent major motion film production here in the San Francisco Bay Area. An on the waterfront set flash montage is at the right. "Play Misy for Me" was my seventh english teachers favorite film, circa 1971. I grew up in Maryland. The film featured Seacliff and San Francisco as a moody backdrop. It was Clint Eastwoods directorial debut. The Conversation was big at the film school I went to, I never realized it was a Francis Ford Copola/Fred Roos film until now. The Conversation is definitely a period peace from San Francisco Gone By. No offense intended, but an old boys club that once dominated here gone by the wayside. Basic Instinct, then becomes a new definition with Sharon Stone blazenly taken a female lead role. Amy Tans' "The Joy Luck Club" novel first then movie certainly moved past many social barriers with a novel based on chinese women. Bandits make the list because every time I drive up the coast I remember lines/scenes from the film when I see locations the film was shot in. I liked the film, it had a clever plot, I liked the actors, so it made the list.
Hitchcock. He set the bar on thrillers and storytelling. I proudly have framed photography, posters and prints in every room at the York Hotel, hotel of Kim Novak or Madeleine Elster/Judy Barton. I have been in her room, or the room at the York Hotel where the filming actually took place. Ever since I moved to San Francisco Bay Area in 1985, the actual close proximity of the Mission Delores to the rest of the film story has always bothered me. It so close and it seemed so remote in the film. Her suicide scene at Fort Point set the bar for disturbed suicides. Thing is, you would not necessarily die if you flung yourself into the Bay from Fort Point. I love the elegance and excellance of Hitchcock films. He hated women. Come on! They all have platinum died blonde hair and are morons. What was his insistance on preying on the human emotion of fear? Just kidding, the blockbuster success of films like "Jaws" proved we all love to be scared. Leading to the selection of San Francisco Bay Area resident Robin Williams in Mrs. Doubtfire and the human need for comic relief.
Disclaimer - I am not a film critic. These are my just my little opinions. Take what you need and leave the rest, enjoy the site.
