About every 30 minutes, visitors to the Old Faithful Geyser of California are treated to an eruption of steam and scalding water spraying 60 to 100 feet in the air. There are only two other "old faithful" geysers in the world that have earned the title due to their regular eruptions. On the geyser's grounds, there is a gift shop, exhibit hall, snack bar, picnic area.

Old Faithful Geyser of California is open to visitors 7 days a week, including holidays. HOURS: 9 AM - 5 PM in the winter and 9 AM - 6 PM in the summer.

When the geyser's show is delayed or diminished, an earthquake is likely within the next couple of weeks in the 500 miles surrounding the geyser. "

TO GUSH.

Calistoga, a destination of wine, water and wellness.

At the north of Napa Valley is a small historic town called Calistoga. Rumour has it that "Calistoga" is a cross between California and Saratoga, because Samuel Brannan who bought the place in the

1800's was planning on turning it into a resort like Saratoga in New York. Named a Distinctive Destination by the National Trust for Historic Preservation in 2001, Calistoga enables a visitor to see wine country as it was before freeways and fast food - only two-lane roads lead there and fast food franchises are banned by law. Rich in history, rich in minerals, Calistoga is home of special water. This water is in the form off natural hot springs and sources beneath the surface. Calistoga Water Company figured that out in the 1920's and began bottling it. The healing waters have been attracting humans seeking health from early native american indians to the current well heeled traveler.

Geyser means to gush in Icelandic, home of the Haukadalur Geyser. Calistoga has a geyser. Well, the geyser has geyser like attributes and behavior. A geyser is a hot spring characterized by the intermittant discharge of water ejected turbulently and accomplished by a vapor phase. Rumor has it this geyser was the result of a man made drilling. Apparently, there are a lot of rumors about Calistoga. None the less, scientifically "Old Faithful" acts like a Geyser. Geysers are temporary geological features, the life span is at the most a few thousand years. So be sure to hurry.

Calistoga's Geyser is named "Old Faithful" because of its regularity (give or take 5-10 minutes). Apparently, if the regularity deviates, then an Earthquake is looming. This is the finding of Olga Kolbek who owns the Geyser and has been recording the geyser eruptions for twenty years. Women's intuition and as usual few scientists wanted to believe her, but Dr. Paul Silver of the Carnegie Institue validated her claims.

Geysers are generally found in areas of Volcanic activity, and Calistoga is rich in Volcanic Ash. Mix a little Volcuanic Ash, a little hot spring and voila, MUD BATH. Historically, the mud bath treatment has been used for centuries in Eastern and Western European spas as a way to relieve athritis. In Calistoga, currently, the typical mud bather is a seeker of the deep relaxation that the bath provides. The typical mud bath experience might include being immersed in a mud bath, followed by a relaxing natural hot springs mineral whirlpool bath, followed by a warming stint in a natural steam room, followed by a relaxing and restful blanket wrap. Most people follow up the mud bath routine with a therapeutic body massage. And then of course a night of fine wine.

In looking for the right spa for you, an important question is wether or not it is actually on or being fed by a natural mineral spring, unless you are ok with imported. In which case you may as well visit a spa anywhere and don't need to make the trip to Calistoga. Below is a list of Calistoga Mud Bath and Near By Mineral Hot Spring Fed Spas:

  • Calistoga Golden Haven Hot Springs Spa & Resort, Napa Valley

  • Features: Warm Mineral Hot Springs Pool, Sundeck, Spa Treatments, Mud Baths.

  • Indian Springs Spa + Resort

  • From their Website:
"For centuries, people have gravitated to this land and recognized its restorative powers. The Wapoo Indians settled here 8,000 years ago, bathing in the warm waters. The Spanish followed, naming the grounds Agua Caliente. Notable Californian Sam Brannan was an early promoter of the area and, in 1861, created the original spa, mud baths, and water plunge (now Olympic-size mineral pool)."

    Indian Springs Spa + Resort

Both of the above Calistoga Spas are wonderful. I personally prefer Indian Springs because I love California history, California early architecture, and antiques. Golden Haven is more modernized, but given the choice I would spend my time at the Indian Springs.
If you are more adventuresome, you might try Harbin Hot Springs or Wiblur Hot Springs, both of which are fed from springs, hot springs and natural mineral waters. These locations are clothing optional, alternative and restorative for the soul. I am not bashful, so I do enjoy the peaceful retreat. Both of them are very "private" places, not exclusive but private in terms of getting in touch with yourself.
