BUDDHIST MEDITATION CENTERS + RETREATS in SAN FRANCISCO
- The San Francisco Zen Center
FROM THEIR WEBSITE:
San Francisco Zen Center was established in 1962 by Shunryu Suzuki Roshi (1904-1971) and his American students. Suzuki Roshi is known to countless readers as the author of the modern spiritual classic, Zen Mind, Beginner's Mind.
The purpose of San Francisco Zen Center is to make accessible and embody the wisdom and compassion of the Buddha as expressed in the Soto Zen tradition established by Dogen Zenji in 13th-century Japan and conveyed to us by Suzuki Roshi and other Buddhist teachers. Our practice flows from the insight that all beings are Buddha, and that sitting in meditation is itself the realization of Buddha nature, or enlightenment.
Today, San Francisco Zen Center is one of the largest Buddhist sanghas outside Asia. It has three practice places: City Center in the vibrant heart of San Francisco; Green Gulch Farm, whose organic fields meet the ocean in Marin County; and Tassajara Zen Mountain Center -- the first Zen training monastery in the West -- in the Ventana Wilderness inland from Big Sur. These three complementary practice centers offer daily meditation, regular monastic retreats and practice periods, classes, lectures, and workshops.
Zen Center is a practice place for a diverse population of students, visitors, lay people, priests, and monks guided by teachers who follow in Suzuki Roshi's style of warm hand and heart to warm hand and heart. All are welcome.
Zen Center programs also reach out to the community, helping prisoners, the homeless, and those in recovery; protecting the environment; and working for peace. See our outreach program for details. Suzuki Roshi's disciples and students of his disciples now lead dharma groups around the country.

- The San Francisco Buddhist Center
FROM THE WEBSITE:
The SFBC is part of the Friends of the Western Buddhist Order (FWBO), an international Buddhist network of public centers, communities, ethical businesses, and social projects. Founded in England in 1968 by Urgyen Sangharakshita, FWBO draws inspiration from the whole of the Buddhist tradition and is based in central teachings that are common to all the main schools. At the heart of the FWBO is the Western Buddhist Order, made up of men and women from diverse backgrounds who have dedicated their lives to the practice of Buddhism.
We are located in San Francisco's Mission district, and provide a comprehensive program of Buddhist meditation classes and courses, Buddhism courses, writing and performance events, yoga classes, residential weekend and week-long retreats, nonresidential day retreats, and more! For more information, see our calendar.
Our community is dedicated to supporting the development of spiritual friendship among those who wish to experience the benefits of Buddhist practice and believe that it can make a constructive contribution to the modern world.

- Green Gulch Farm
FROM THEIR WEBSITE:
Green Gulch Farm Zen Center, also known as Green Dragon Temple (Soryu-ji), is a Buddhist practice center in the Japanese Soto Zen tradition offering training in Zen meditation and ordinary work. It is one of three centers that make up San Francisco Zen Center, which was founded by Shunryu Suzuki-roshi.
Our effort at Green Gulch is to awaken in ourselves and the many people who come here the bodhisattva spirit, the spirit of kindness and realistic helpfulness. This is how we offer our understanding of Buddha's Way.
Green Gulch Farm is located in Marin County, just north of San Francisco, in a valley that opens out onto the Pacific Ocean. In addition to the temple program of zen and study, it includes an organic farm and garden, as well as a guest house and conference center.

- Tassajara Zen Mountain Center
FROM THEIR WEBSITE:
Tassajara is located in a remote part of the Ventana Wilderness and for centuries has been visited as a place of healing. In 1966 the first Soto Zen monastery outside of Asia was established at Tassajara by Shunryu Suzuki Roshi and the San Francisco Zen Center, to provide a place where students of Buddhism could withdraw from the busy world for a period of intensive meditation and study. THE CENTER FOR ATTITUDINAL HEALING
In 1975 there was virtually no emotional support system for people affected by catastrophic illness. Most people in the U.S. were no longer living in extended family situations and rarely died at home, as they had a generation before. Instead, illness and dying was largely relegated to hospital rooms where the medical problem was the only focus. In this setting, the emotional experience was often one of fear and painful isolation, with few opportunities for people to open to a deeper experience.

Today, the Center offers support not only to children but to people of all ages. Nearly 300 people are served every week. All our services are still provided by regular volunteers, not "experts", just as it was in that very first group with children. The primary requirement for volunteering at the Center is a willingness to be unconditionally loving, to listen non-judgmentally, and to be genuine. Certainly, professionals do volunteer at the Center but they leave their titles at the door.

Living with Grieving Series ...
Grief and sorrow are the heart’s natural response to loss. It takes courage to grieve, to honor the pain we carry. In this series of workshops, we will acknowledge, integrate, and accept the truth of our losses in an atmosphere of support.
